Are your clothes sweatshop-free? A question you may be asking yourself is, ‘Why does it matter?’ Well let’s take a look at what a sweatshop is.

A sweatshop is a place of business that usually manufactures items such as shoes, clothing, toys, or furniture. While that may sound just fine, the problem is in the way the employees are treated. At sweatshops, most employees are exposed to very poor working conditions which could include exposure to dangerous fumes, chemicals, or other such harmful elements. Furthermore, many of the sweatshops that exist make their employees work extremely long hours for extremely little pay.  Even worse, many of the sweatshops break child labor laws and force kids as young as eight years old to work in these harsh conditions.

Don’t assume that just because you are buying items made of bamboo fabric, hemp, organic cotton, organic wool, or any other eco-friendly material that you are buying something sweatshop-free. While it is good to buy green and help the Earth, we must also  be sure to take care of our fellow man. Stay informed and stay green!
