Beyond Thrift Stores – Going Free

Thousands of usable items end up in the garbage each day. Free stores or swaps keep good stuff out of the landfill.

Some do it for charity. Some to make a political statement. Others because it just makes sense. Whatever the reason, “free” stores or swaps are cropping up in locations across Europe and the U.S.

Giving away clothes and other items for free isn’t just good for the needy, or a boon to overburdened homemakers. It’s a great thing for the environment. Putting these items back into circulation ensures the most use from the energy and resources that went into producing them. And when the exchange is local, it eliminates the fuel consumption that would have gone into bringing new items to the area.

Many rural communities, where residents are expected to haul their own trash, have developed impromptu “swaps” at the local dump. Residents leave their unwanted but usable items in a specified area, free for the taking. “It’s a good feeling,” says one. “If it’s really useful someone will take it, so I know it won’t go to waste. And it’s good to help out the neighbors. Plus it’s always nice to find something you can use and not have to go to town for it.”

The online version of the dump swap is a little more specific, but retains the same sentiment of goodwill. The Freecycle Network http://www.freecycle.org/ is a grassroots, volunteer-run organization “all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills.” It’s a website where you can connect with others in your local area. You have to sign in to join (it’s free, of course) and then you can find your local area’s page to post items wanted or offer to give away unneeded things. The site is peppered with “thank-you’s,” both from donors and recipients of clothing and other items.

Another site where items are posted to be given away free is The Digger Archives It’s “an ongoing Web project to preserve and present the history of the anarchist guerilla street theater group that challenged the emerging Counterculture of the Sixties and whose actions and ideals inspired (and continue to inspire) a generation (of all ages) to create models of Free Association.” (Now there’s a mouthful!) It’s certainly less practical in nature than the Freecycle Network, but if you lean towards anarchism and/or are a fan of 60′s and 70′s retro items, be sure to check it out.

Finally, you’ll want to ask around in your local area to find out if there are any free stores or swaps in your area. Or, start one up yourself! When available, they’re not just popular for the low-income population, but also the eco-conscious. And you never know – you may just find the next hottest piece for your trendy retro wardrobe hidden amongst the piles!
