Get Hip Get Green
Remember the Frankie Goes to Hollywood “RELAX” T-shirts? They were totally hip and totally cool – and totally befuddling. And after a while, totally embarrassing when the wearer suddenly realized she didn’t have a clue what the “statement” emblazoned on her chest really meant! (And maybe she was even glad she didn’t.)
It’s hip to make statements, for sure.
But today’s young people (and older ones, too) have savvied up to the fact that it’s even hipper when the statements stand for something you believe in.
Few people are more aware of the power of fashion statements to make a real-life impact than L.A. entrepreneur Lisa Leija, founder of Get Hip Get Green. Her products combine practicality with a mission: to get out the word about saving the planet.
Spreading the Word
Get Hip Get Green’s products include reusable shopping bags, lunch bags and stainless steel water bottles featuring Frankie-style slogans such as “Re-Think Plastic” and “Love This Planet.” But the bags are only a support for the company’s real product – the message. Each item comes with a hang tag that explains some of the challenges faced by the environment today. And of course, the bags themselves help spread the word.
A portion of the proceeds from each sale is donated to the Green Ambassadors, an environmental education program that empowers youth to be agents of change in their communities and world.
“I think that environmental education and empowering others is so important for the future of our planet.” says Leija. “If I can help others take part in helping to preserve our natural resources through something as simple as using reusable bags, then I’ll have made a difference.”
Amen to that!
