H&M to stop destroying clothes

hmIn one of the oddest stories to date, fashion store H&M in New York had recently come out with a new line of eco-friendly clothing. They touted their new eco-friendly fashions citing such materials as organic cotton, recycled polyester, and other green fabrics. Great right? Here’s the rub.

According to a reporter Jim Dwyer of the New York Times, the store was destroying and throwing away clothing that had not been worn or sold on an almost nightly pace. Huh? How can you claim to be eco-friendly and then create more waste for the planet, especially seeing how New York has so many homeless who would love the unwanted garments?

This move outraged many environmentalists – and rightly so. To that end the store has apparently seen the error of its ways and says it will no longer be destroying the clothing but rather donating it to local charities. But the question is, why haven’t they been doing this all along?

EcoZeal.com is baffled that anyone would waste clothing instead of recycling clothing when faced with the option. Is H&M simply trying to win back angered customers? Will they succeed? Time will tell but thing is for sure, the powers that be at H&M will certainly think twice before they disrespect the city -and the planet- again.
