Meet Lisa Call

Lisa Call is an artist working in fiber who creates bold geometric quilts that are composed of her richly colored hand dyed fabric. Through her award-winning fiber artwork, Lisa Call investigates the boundaries that divide our world.

Her pieces are influenced by physical structures, such as fences and stone walls. She finds inspiration in lines of posts, the negative space between odd-shaped stones, and uniform rows of bricks.

Her quilts also allude to the internal psychological boundaries we use to hide our true thoughts and feelings from others – and often from ourselves.

Her work is abstract but draws elements from many places: her love of the colors and geological forms of the southwest, her interest in human-made structures for containment such as fences and stone walls, and her exploration of her own internal psychological walls and boundaries.

I design and create vivid geometric abstract contemporary quilts. Some people call these things art quilts, or studio quilts, or fiber art, or studio art quilts or any number of other terms. I prefer the term “quilts” but it conjures up images of our grandmother’s quilts.

And while traditional quilts are beautiful, they aren’t what I make, so I’ve added the term contemporary to better define my choice of art media. Whatever you want to call them, quilts are my passion. My goal is to become the very best artist possible and so I spend most of my free time making art..”

Call’s award winning work has been shown in exhibits throughout the United States and in Europe including Craft Forms at the Wayne Art Center and the Contemporary Crafts Museum in Portland, Oregon.

A self taught artist, Call began making one of a kind contemporary quilts in 1993. In 1997 she founded The Fiber Connection, a successful online artist support group.
