Nothing Beats Angora for Luxury and Warmth
Light, warm, and incredibly cozy – angora wool is so soft and luxurious you’d think the Easter Bunny himself had made it. And you’d be right. Angora is made from the fur of a special type of rabbit bred just for its long, silky coat.
Unlike the rabbit fur coats and muffs of yesteryear, items made from angora wool don’t result from harming the animals. The bunnies are shorn, combed or plucked for their fur. (Don’t worry – it’s only plucked while the rabbits are shedding, and doesn’t hurt the bunny one bit. In fact, during molting the hair comes out in clumps so loose they can actually be spun right from the rabbit!) Rabbits don’t tolerate heat well, and many seem to enjoy being relieved of their warm winter coats.
Even if the rabbits don’t always appreciate angora’s incredible warmth, people certainly do! Angora is one of the best-insulating fibers known to man, and is up to 7 times warmer than sheep’s wool. It’s so warm, in fact, that it actually has a therapeutic effect for people with arthritis, muscle tension, kidney ailments, poor circulation and other disorders aided by heat.
Angora wool is not just warm – it’s unbelievably soft. If you have ever stroked the fur of even an ordinary pet rabbit, you know how incredibly soft it can be. Take that sensation and multiply it three times, and you’ll get an idea of the silky sensuousness you’ll only get from long-haired Angora rabbits.
A distinctive feature of Angora products is the halo effect of the fuzzy yarn. Wearing an angora sweater is like having your very own fur coat. It’s even been referred to as the “guilt free fur!”
Angora wool is relatively rare. The rabbits demand a lot of care to keep their coats in good condition. For this reason, most angora is blended with other fibers, lending them a touch of its distinctive warmth and luxurious softness.
The biggest demand for 100% angora is for knitting wool. If you knit, you’ll be captivated by this light, strong, luxurious yarn. (But don’t use it to learn – its fuzziness makes it a better choice for experienced knitters.) Fluffy Angora offers 100% angora yarns in natural white or a rainbow of hand-dyed colors, as well as ready-and custom-made angora sweaters, scarves, hats and more, all made from the hair of the giant angora. If you live in a cooler climate, you couldn’t do better at Easter this year than to treat yourself to the bunnies’ best – luxurious Angora!
