Nutria - pest or product?

nutriaAs you can see a Nutria looks like a mix between a rat and a beaver and they are ultra destructive to the environment in which they occupy. They are now native to the wet lands of Louisiana though they were imported from an entirely different part of the world -Argentina to be exact- in the early 1930s.

They used to be used as a supply for fur but when demand slowed in the 1970s the quickly reproducing animal soon became a big problem. Nutria will consume everything in its wetlands path and not only eats the grass but the roots as well. This has caused the destruction of hundreds of thousands of acres of wetlands.

To combat the problem the Louisiana authorities have allowed the animal to be hunted and they pay a reward per tail. Ultimately what is happening now is that the pelts are being burned or thrown away. This gave way to an idea.

Now some innovative thinkers are trying to come up with a more eco-friendly way to get rid of the pelts; wearing them. The fur is very versatile and if the animal must meet its end anyway then it might as well be put to use. Converting the pelts into an fashion will also reduce waste and thus represent a more Earth friendly way to do things.

EcoZeal.com hopes that the problem can be resolved in such a way that as little waste as possible is produced. While it may not be as green hemp, organic cotton, organic silk, or the like at least Nutria fur can serve a purpose rather than just be wasted.
