What makes organic clothing organic?
When many people hear the words ‘organic clothing’ they think back to the 1970’s when a huge movement took place and fashions such as burlap shirts, shapeless tunics, and of course tie-dye took center stage. But as with all fashion, organic fashion has made huge strides in looks and wearablity.
Many of the organic fashions of today are just as stylish looking as their ‘planet hating’ counterparts. A big reason for this is how well the materials and fabrics that are used to put together this eco-friendly fashion have come along. So what makes organic clothing organic?
Organic clothing is clothing that is designed to be manufactured with the environment in mind. This movement keys in on farming and processing techniques that work hand in hand with nature to help reduce the pollution to air, water, and land. In general, organic clothing material is derived from plants that have not been radiated, treated with pesticides, or genetically mutated. It is a true green approach to fashion.
To be classified as ‘organic’ any article of clothing that want to have that ‘organic tag’ has to meet with strict standards of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). So just as with that organic piece of fruit you buy at the grocery store, when you see that organic tag on clothes you can be sure that certain measures had to be taken in order to earn that tag.
EcoZeal.com urges everyone to look for that special tag because it not only means a great looking garment that was made with quality and care, it means a better environment for us all to live in. Do your part to help save the planet, one t-shirt at a time.
